I moved to Sonoma, California from Brooklyn, New York in 2002 after deciding big city life wasn't for me. I was in my mid-twenties and sought a slower lifestyle in a pretty place. Bonus points for Sonoma for having two dear friends already living there, so off I went.
I had traveled a bit through Northern California during a road trip the year before but the wine countries of Sonoma and Napa Valley were largely pretty foreign to me. To put it in perspective, the extent of my wine knowledge consisted of mixing 7-Up with red wine to make spritzers. Gasp! Yes, I've become a bit more knowledgeable over the years but may still drop an ice cube in a glass of white wine if it's not chilled enough. Shhh... don't tell anyone ;)
Exploring this area has been great fun, and running my commercial photo business here has afforded me access to some special places off the main roads. Tucked up in the hills, beyond tree lines and on high mountain tops are some spectacular vistas stretching as far as San Francisco Bay. Studying how the light changes during the year and how the different micro climates alter the landscape has been invaluable for making both commercial and fine art photos.
